As the Chief Academic Officer of the University, the Provost oversees a number of campus-wide initiatives which are distinguished by their innovative approaches to achieving strong student outcomes, to supporting of faculty scholarship and pedagogy, and to enhancing the sense of equity and community on campus.
ADMINISTRATIVE MODERNIZATION PROGRAM (AMP)
The Administrative Modernization Program (AMP) is an initiative supported by the Provost and President that will update, strengthen, and unify administrative processes to advance UMD’s strategic mission and improve the level of service for students, faculty and staff.
The University of Maryland ADVANCE Program began in 2010 as a five-year, NSF-funded campus-wide project promoting institutional transformation with respect to the retention and advancement of women faculty. We quickly expanded to consider ways to improve work environments for all faculty, including for under-represented minority faculty and professional track faculty.
CENTER FOR SPORTS MEDICINE, HEALTH AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE
The new CSMHHP is designed to advance the discovery of innovative solutions to improve human health, performance, and injury recovery. The University of Maryland School of Medicine at UMB will lead the clinical programs and will collaborate with UMCP on research at the center. The center also will include a program to educate undergraduate students about innovation and entrepreneurism. The center is expected to open in 2020.
DeVOS INSTITUTE OF ARTS MANAGEMENT
The DeVos Institute of Arts Management provides training, consultation, and implementation support for arts managers and their boards. Institute leadership and consultants—all arts managers themselves—understand that, in today’s environment, there is no time or resource to waste. Therefore, Institute services are lean, direct, and practical.
EDWARD ST. JOHN LEARNING AND TEACHING CENTER
The Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center, the first new academic building on McKeldin Mall in 50 years, will be the centerpiece of a new standard of teaching space for the campus. Named for the Baltimore developer, philanthropist and 1961 alumnus who donated $10 million to the project, the 180,000-square-foot building will encourage active learning with state-of-the-art technology throughout its 22 classrooms and labs.
FIRST-YEAR INNOVATION & RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
The University of Maryland First-Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE) provides inquiry-based experiences and broad personal and academic mentorship for first-year students through participation in faculty-led innovation and research streams. Students earn degree credit while engaged with faculty and a peer cohort in the yearlong development of skill sets in authentic inquiry, innovation and experimental design, leadership and scholarly communication.
GLOBAL CLASSROOMS INITIATIVE
Global Classroom courses will offer UMD students the opportunity to participate in engaged, significant, and easily accessible credit-bearing international experiences that mirror in process, means, and impact the type of professional interactions they will encounter upon graduation. Teams combining students from UMD and partner universities abroad will engage in international, project-based, collaborative work aimed at improving the global common good.
The Maryland Global Initiative for Cybersecurity (MaGIC) promotes and coordinates efforts across the University of Maryland, College Park, to expand its cyber education, research, and development activities.
MARYLAND DIALOGUES ON DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY
The Maryland Dialogues on Diversity and Community are a series of events, lectures, symposia, discussions and listening sessions for faculty, staff, students and alumni to help advance discussions of identity, difference and commonality. Meaningful dialogue and critical thinking can change culture. The Maryland Dialogues are an ongoing initiative that will highlight one aspect of the intersecting quality of diversity at a time.
MPOWERING THE STATE
MPowering the State is a special working relationship between the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) that promotes INNOVATION and IMPACT through COLLABORATION. Launched in 2012, it leverages the sizable strengths of both universities to advance interdisciplinary research, create new opportunities for students, and solve important problems for the people of Maryland and the nation.
To address the need for more science and math teachers by preparing future teachers who are truly grounded in their disciplines and can effectively communicate not only the subject material, but also the excitement of discovery. Preparing the next generation starts with outstanding science and math teachers in our schools. Terrapin Teachers will answer growing local and national needs for highly qualified math and science teachers.
THE PHILLIPS COLLECTION PARTNERSHIP
The vision for our partnership is a dramatic expansion of scholarship and innovation in the arts. The Phillips Collection will expand its vision, reach greater audiences, explore new opportunities for the 21st century museum, and pursue key museum initiatives. The University of Maryland will expand its scholarship and academic programs within the arts, and provide research and education opportunities for UMD faculty and students.
