Associate Provost for Planning and Special Projects

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor David Cronrath as Associate Provost for Planning and Special Projects, effective February 1, 2018. 

David is currently a Professor in the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and was the Dean of the School until Nov 2016. While Dean he also served as the University liaison to The Phillips Collection, the University’s Washington, D.C. partner for the Arts. Since stepping down as Dean he has served as a special assistant to the Provost. Before coming to the University of Maryland, he was Dean of the College of Design at Louisiana State University where he led nationally ranked ceramics and landscape architecture programs.

Since joining the University in 2010, David has served the University by providing advice on campus planning issues, town-gown development opportunities and helped guide the University’s Design Excellence program developed by Carlo Colella, Vice President for Administration & Finance. He serves as a board member of the Terrapin Development Corporation, the recently formed real estate development arm of the University and the College Park Foundation.

Professor Cronrath earned his professional degree from Penn State University and a Master of Architecture from University of California - Berkeley. While at Berkeley he studied design methods and conducted design research where his work with Lars Lerup received the prestigious Progressive Architecture Award for Research. Prior to joining academia, he was a practicing architect in Philadelphia for 14 years where his firm received national and regional design awards and recognition.

David has been active in The American Institute of Architects, the National Council for Architectural Registration Boards and the National Architectural Accreditation Board for over 15 years. He is a member of the Futures Task Force for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and the National Council for Examiners of Engineers and Surveyors. In this role he is working with industry leaders to define changes in the design professions and their impact on professional education and licensure practices. He was awarded the National Council Architectural Registration Boards’ President’s Medal for his efforts in developing the architectural registration exam.

I am confident that Professor Cronrath will be an invaluable member of the leadership team in the Provost’s office and will continue to serve the University with distinction in his new role as Associate Provost. Please join me in welcoming him to this new position.
